5 Common Theme Park Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
There's nothing quite like the excitement of arriving at a theme park. With our tickets in hand, we’re ready for a day of adventure.
But, somewhere between the third roller coaster and the 45-minute wait for lunch, things can start to go downhill. Suddenly, everyone's getting cranky, and the happiest place on earth isn't looking quite so happy anymore. Fortunately, a few simple moves can help us avoid some common theme park mistakes.
Trying to Do Everything Before Lunch
We've paid good money for those tickets, so, naturally, we want to get our money's worth. But, trying to squeeze every popular attraction into the first few hours can leave everyone exhausted before the afternoon even begins.
Instead, choose a handful of must-do attractions and leave some breathing room between them. That way, if you discover an unexpected show or a particularly tempting snack stand, you can enjoy it without worrying about falling behind schedule.
Waiting Until Everyone's Hangry
There's a special kind of grumpiness that develops when we've been standing in line for an hour without eating. And, when everyone gets hungry at the same time, deciding where to have lunch can take on enormous proportions.
Avoid the drama by planning meal breaks before the entire group reaches its breaking point. Pack a few snacks if the park allows outside food, and keep some water handy throughout the day. The CDC recommends drinking plenty of fluids and taking breaks in the shade when spending time outdoors in hot weather.
Forgetting That Little Legs Get Tired
Children might be the most enthusiastic members of the theme park crew, but they don't have the stamina to match. Between walking across enormous parks and waiting in long lines, even the most excited little visitor can become overwhelmed.
Build in opportunities to sit down, enjoy a quieter attraction, or simply watch the world go by. And don't underestimate the appeal of an afternoon break at the hotel if you're staying nearby. Sometimes, a short rest is all it takes to turn a cranky afternoon into an enjoyable evening.
Letting One Closed Ride Ruin the Day
We've all been there. After looking forward to a particular roller coaster for weeks, we arrive to discover it's temporarily closed. Disappointing? Absolutely.
But, spending the next hour complaining about it isn't going to make the ride reopen any faster. Check the park's official app for updates, then find something else to enjoy. Maybe there's a show you’ve never seen or an attraction you overlooked while planning.
Some of the best vacation memories happen when our original plans don't work out.
Remembering Why We Came in the First Place
It's easy to become so focused on getting through our itinerary that we forget to enjoy the experience. We rush from one attraction to another, check wait times constantly, and worry about everything we haven't done yet.
But a great theme park day doesn't mean we have to ride every roller coaster or see every show. Sometimes, the best moments happen while sharing an ice cream, watching a parade, or laughing about the ridiculous photo taken on a ride.
Years from now, we won't even remember how many attractions we squeezed into one afternoon. We'll remember who was there, what made us laugh, and that enormous ice cream cone we finished before it melted.
A Little Less Planning, a Lot More Fun
The best theme park days aren't the ones where we manage to do everything on our list.
With a little flexibility, a few well-timed breaks, and some patience when things go wrong, we can spend less time stressing and more time enjoying ourselves.
