6 Easy Ways to Make Your Morning Coffee More Interesting

Typically, coffee doesn't need much help. Most mornings, we're perfectly happy with our favorite mug, the usual splash of milk, and enough caffeine to start forming complete sentences.

But, every now and then, the same cup we've been drinking for years could use a little something extra. And we don't need a collection of coffee-shop syrups to get there.

1. Add Cinnamon Before You Brew

Cinnamon and coffee make a great couple. The trick is adding the spice before the coffee reaches the mug.

Ground cinnamon doesn't dissolve well in water, so stirring it into finished coffee can leave little specks floating around. Instead, add a small sprinkle directly to the grounds before you brew.

You can start with about 1/4 teaspoon and adjust the amount as you go.

2. Swap the Sugar for Maple Syrup

The sugar bowl isn't our only option when the coffee needs a little sweetness.

Maple syrup blends right into hot coffee, while bringing its own flavor to the cup. You can start with about a teaspoon and give it a taste before you add more.

A little milk or cream works nicely with it, too, especially if you want something closer to a maple latte without making an actual latte.

3. Give Cardamom a Chance

Cardamom is less familiar beside the coffee maker, but pairing it with coffee is nothing new. The two have a long history together in Middle Eastern coffee traditions.

Cardamom has a warm, fragrant flavor, so you don't need much of it. Like cinnamon, add a small pinch of ground cardamom to the coffee grounds before you brew and see how you like it.

4. Try a Tiny Pinch of Salt

This one sounds a little strange, but there's some science behind it.

Salt can suppress our perception of bitterness, which may help if coffee tastes harsher than you’d like.

A tiny pinch is enough to experiment with. It can go into the grounds before brewing, or you can add an even smaller amount to the finished cup. And tiny really is the operative word here.

5. Make a Quick Vanilla Creamer

If vanilla coffee is your thing, it's easy to make your own creamer at home.

In a small pitcher or measuring cup, combine:

  • 1/4 cup milk, oat milk, or cream

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon sugar or maple syrup

Stir until the sweetener has dissolved, then pour as much as you’d like into your coffee. The amounts are easy to adjust, depending on how sweet or creamy you like your morning cup.

6. Turn Cocoa Powder Into a Quick Mocha

Unsweetened cocoa powder gives us another reason to rummage through the baking cabinet.

Rather than stirring it directly into a full mug, start by combining:

  • 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar or maple syrup

  • 1 tablespoon hot coffee

Stir until the cocoa mixture is smooth, then add:

  • 1 cup hot coffee

  • 1/4 cup milk, oat milk, or cream

Give everything another stir, then taste and add more sweetener or milk if needed. It'll never be the same as a coffee-shop production, but it'll get some chocolate into your morning.

Our Usual Coffee Can Wait Until Tomorrow

None of these additions requires a huge change to the way you make coffee every morning. They're simply options for the days when the usual cup sounds a little boring.

Try cinnamon in the grounds, pull out the maple syrup, or finally give that jar of cardamom something new to do. Hopefully, that’s enough to jazz up your life for a while.
