8 Ways to Make Store-Bought Desserts Party-Ready

There's no rule that says hosting a party means spending the afternoon baking. Sometimes, the easiest option is picking up a cake or pie from the local grocery store and calling it a day.

But, if you're bringing dessert to a gathering or setting out something sweet for the guests, a little extra attention can make that supermarket purchase look pretty impressive.

This might be the easiest improvement of all. A cake in a plastic supermarket container looks like a supermarket cake. Put that same cake on a pretty serving plate or cake stand, and, suddenly, it looks much more inviting.

The same goes for cookies and brownies. Arrange them on a platter, rather than leaving them in their original packaging.

2. Add Fresh Berries

Fresh fruit can make even the simplest dessert look special. Try arranging strawberries around a cheesecake or scattering raspberries over a chocolate cake. Blueberries also look lovely against white frosting.

Just wash and thoroughly dry the fruit first so it doesn't leave puddles on your dessert.

3. Give It a Dusting of Powdered Sugar

A little powdered sugar can work wonders for store-bought desserts. Use a fine-mesh sieve to lightly dust brownies, pound cake, or a plain Bundt cake just before serving.

For chocolate desserts, cocoa powder can create a similar effect. Just don't go overboard, or your guests might end up wearing the topping.

4. Add a Homemade-Looking Drizzle

A simple drizzle makes a dessert look like you've put some thought into it. Warm a little chocolate sauce or caramel until it's easy to pour, then drizzle it over a cheesecake or mini cakes.

For a pretty presentation, drizzle the sauce onto each dessert plate before adding the slice.

5. Dress Up a Grocery Store Pie

A supermarket pie can look much more appealing with a few finishing touches. You can serve apple pie slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or add freshly whipped cream to a pumpkin pie.

You could even sprinkle a little cinnamon over the whipped cream.

6. Turn Plain Cupcakes Into Party Cupcakes

Plain frosted cupcakes are practically begging for a makeover. You can add colorful sprinkles for a birthday party, chocolate curls for a dinner gathering, or a fresh raspberry on top of each one.

If the original frosting looks messy, smooth it gently with a small spatula before adding your decorations.

7. Make a Dessert Board

Who says a dessert needs to be one big cake? Pick up a few varieties of cookies or other bite-sized treats and arrange them on a wooden board or large platter.

Fill the spaces with strawberries or small chocolates, and you’ll have a dessert spread that guests can help themselves to throughout the night.

8. Add One Freshly Made Element

If you have ten minutes to spare, making just one component yourself can transform the entire dessert. Fresh whipped cream is a great example.

All you have to do is beat cold heavy cream with a little powdered sugar until soft peaks form, then spoon it over your store-bought cake or pie. You can also make a quick berry topping by gently warming the berries with a little sugar until they release their juices.

These finishing touches are an easy way to dress up store-bought desserts without baking anything from scratch.

The next time you're invited to bring dessert, don't worry about finding time to bake. A nice serving dish and a few finishing touches can make an ordinary supermarket treat look beautiful.

And if someone asks whether you made it yourself? You can always tell them you handled the decorating. After all, that part really was homemade.
