Apple's First Foldable iPhone Is More Than a New Product

For years, Apple loyalists have wondered why the company hasn’t embraced the idea of a foldable iPhone at a time when other major smartphone companies are making their devices foldable and more compact. Those concerns finally turned into action at the Apple Event in 2026, where new Apple CEO John Ternus announced the company’s first foldable iPhone.

The $1,999 device immediately became the headline, but the significance of the event goes beyond a new form factor. It also showed that Ternus was willing to push the boundaries of what the company had always done since taking over from former CEO Tim Cook.

The iPhone Finally Folds

Dubbed the iPhone Duo, the foldable iPhone is designed to give Apple customers a much larger display without requiring them to carry a much larger device. The phone opens to a 7.6-inch interior display and has a 5.4-inch exterior screen for use when the device is closed. Apple says the larger display is about 80% bigger than the one on the iPhone 18 Pro, creating considerably more room for multitasking and other activities. John Ternus also announced that the iPhone Duo supports the Apple Pencil, which makes something that’s always been associated with the iPad available to iPhone users.

While there’s plenty of excitement surrounding the news, the price makes it clear that Apple is not treating the Duo as an ordinary upgrade. Starting at $1,999, it is the most expensive iPhone Apple has introduced, putting it firmly into premium territory. It also arrives as a relatively specialized product rather than something Apple appears to expect every iPhone owner to buy.

Apple's Other New iPhones Are More Familiar

The foldable iPhone has grabbed plenty of headlines, but Apple also announced the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Max. Both models receive upgrades to performance, battery life, and photography, including enhanced 48-megapixel camera capabilities and additional camera controls. The Pro models will also incorporate Apple's latest A20-generation chips and new AI-related capabilities. The starting prices are $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, each representing a $100 increase over the previous generation, an increase that’s pretty much in line with Apple’s usual rollout process.

When presented together, the iPhone Duo and the iPhone Max and Pro show that Apple is open to very different interpretations about what the future of the company’s flagship product should look like. One is a more powerful version of the phone people already know. The other changes the physical definition of what an iPhone can be.

This Was Also John Ternus' Moment

The Apple Event 2026 was also a monumental one because it was the first for new Apple CEO John Ternus. Historically, when Apple changes CEOs, which has happened seven times, the new CEO tries to make his first Apple Event a major milestone for customers and the company alike.

Ternus took over as Apple's CEO on September 1, replacing Tim Cook after Cook's long tenure at the company. Ternus had spent years inside Apple's hardware organization and had been closely involved with major products before moving into the top job. The transition from Cook to Ternus took place carefully. Cook was present during the announcement, but Ternus took the central role in presenting Apple’s new product lineup. For a company whose product launches have become almost cultural events, that symbolism matters.

AirPods Are Getting Smarter, Too

Of course, the iPhone wasn’t the only product that Apple featured at the Apple Event 2026. AirPods also got a major update, with noise-cancelling technology coming to the base-level earbuds for the first time.

The new AirPods start at $129, while a $149 version adds wireless charging and on-stem volume controls. The new models continue Apple's effort to make features that once belonged to premium audio products increasingly available across the lineup.

When compared to a foldable iPhone, it may not be the biggest news, but it does serve as reassurance that Apple isn’t forgetting about the products that its customer base loves. Instead, the company is steadily adding intelligence and functionality across the products people already use every day.

A New Day for a Tech Giant

Some people will look at the Apple Event 2026 and decide that the story is that the company finally has a foldable iPhone. However, the event represented much more than that. The company isn't abandoning the formula that made the iPhone successful, but it is showing signs of being willing to push that formula into unfamiliar territory.
