Could a Pair of Socks Be the Secret to a Better Night's Sleep?

Some of us can't imagine climbing into bed without a cozy pair of socks on. Others would rather sleep with their feet hanging out from under the covers.

And, if you've ever shared a bed with someone who has a completely different opinion about nighttime footwear, you know this can be a passionate debate.

But, here's something interesting: those of us who love sleeping with socks might be onto something. Research suggests that keeping our feet warm at night could help us fall asleep faster. The reason has to do with how our bodies regulate temperature.

It sounds a little strange, but warming our feet can help our bodies release heat. According to Cleveland Clinic, wearing socks encourages the blood vessels near the skin's surface to widen, allowing heat to escape. This process is called vasodilation.

As we prepare for sleep, our core body temperature naturally begins to drop. Helping our bodies release heat through our hands and feet may support that process. So, while we're busy keeping our toes warm, our bodies are getting ready for a good night's sleep. Pretty clever, right?

What Does the Research Say?

In a small study, researchers examined whether wearing socks to bed could improve sleep quality. Six young men spent nights sleeping with and without socks in a cool environment.

The results were interesting. When participants wore socks, they:

  • Fell asleep an average of 7.5 minutes faster.

  • Slept approximately 32 minutes longer.

  • Experienced fewer awakenings during the night.

  • Had better overall sleep efficiency.

Now, before we rush out to fill our drawers with bedtime socks, there's an important detail. The study only involved six people, so we can't assume everyone will experience the same benefits. Still, the findings suggest that keeping our feet warm could be a simple way to make bedtime more comfortable.

If you're thinking about trying this little sleep experiment, there's no need to purchase anything fancy. The important thing is to choose socks that are comfortable and breathable.

Cleveland Clinic recommends looking for options made from materials such as:

  • Cotton: A soft, breathable choice

  • Merino Wool: A warm option that can manage moisture

  • Bamboo-Based Fabrics: Often soft and comfortable against the skin

Choose a loose-fitting pair that won't leave marks around your ankles, and put on clean socks before bed. It's also best not to wear compression socks overnight, unless your doctor told you to. And, if you tend to get too warm while sleeping, there's no reason to force yourself into socks.

What if We Prefer Sleeping Barefoot?

Which brings us to the counter-argument. There's absolutely nothing wrong with keeping your feet uncovered. Sleeping comfortably is more important than following a particular bedtime trend. If your feet are already warm, adding socks might make you uncomfortable, rather than help you sleep.

And, if you have circulation problems, diabetes, or recurring foot infections, chat with your doctor before changing your nighttime routine. Remember, socks aren't a treatment for persistent insomnia or other sleep disorders. They're simply a small thing that might make falling asleep a little easier.

If cold feet regularly send you searching for an extra blanket, why not try wearing socks to bed for a few nights? Choose a comfortable pair, keep your bedroom at a temperature you enjoy, and see whether you notice a difference. You might discover that warm toes help you drift off a little sooner.

And if you wake up halfway through the night determined to kick them off? Well, at least you gave those cozy socks a fair chance.
