The channel started off as a video game channel, and Kjellberg sprinkled in some reaction videos. However, things took a turn when he and his wife, Marzia, moved to Japan. The family vlogs weren't supposed to last this long. Kjellberg said the original idea was simply to document the couple's transition to life in Japan. He figured they might make “one or two” videos. Instead, the response from viewers encouraged them to keep going, and the series eventually became a nearly five-year chronicle of their lives. Now, it’s over.

On September 22, Felix Kjellberg uploaded a YouTube video called “Thank You and Goodbye.” The video concludes a series that followed the couple through their life in Japan, the birth of their son, Björn, and the years that followed. Kjellberg isn’t leaving YouTube. Instead, he’s moving away from the family vlogging content that’s been so popular over the last five years.

The Vlogs Were Never Supposed To Become This Big

Over the last few years, PewDiePie’s son, Björn, became a bit of a celebrity among fans of the channel. That popularity is largely responsible for the PewDiePie family vlogs ending. The content creator simply doesn’t want to continue producing and publishing content featuring his young son anymore.

There was never a plan for the channel to turn into a family vlogging platform. Kjellberg and Marzia wanted to share what it was like to move to Japan and start a new chapter of their lives. In his May announcement that the vlogs would end, Kjellberg explained that the couple originally thought they might make only a video or two.

When Björn was born in 2023, Kjellberg didn’t become a new kind of content creator. Instead, he added another person to the cast of his family vlog. That is when Kjellberg eventually decided the equation needed to change.

Björn Became a Big Part of the Channel

Kjellberg has been clear that the decision isn't because he suddenly stopped enjoying the vlogs. He and Marzia enjoyed sharing their family life, and Kjellberg has repeatedly expressed appreciation for the audience that followed along. However, as Björn got older, keeping the family vlogs going meant that more and more of his childhood would inevitably become part of a YouTube channel with more than 110 million subscribers.

When Kjellberg announced that the channel would be shifting away from the family-style vlog, he explained that Björn had become “too much part” of production, and that continuing the series would place “too much pressure” on his son’s online presence.

In his statement from May, Kjellberg said, “Now he's three years old, and we feel like it's a good time to end the vlogs,” he said. “If he wants to be part of it, that should be his choice later.” He’s not saying that Björn can never appear online again. Instead, he wants it to be his son’s choice when he’s old enough to consent to being published on the internet.

The Internet Will Still See Some Of Björn

Björn isn’t being completely scrubbed from the internet, so fans who have invested in the Kjellberg family’s lives don’t have to worry about never seeing them all together again.

Kjellberg and Marzia have said they may still share occasional photographs or video clips of their son. The difference is that those appearances will be more deliberate rather than being part of a regular vlog series built around family life.

Kjellberg explained that if viewers happen to see Björn in a future post, they shouldn't assume the family has abandoned the privacy decision.

The Timing Matters

Felix and Marzia waited for a while before shifting away from the family content that they’ve been filming for the better part of the last five years, and that was intentional. The couple wanted viewers to walk with them through a significant period of their lives. That makes the decision feel less like a rejection of the format and more like a recognition that the circumstances have changed.

As parents, Marzia and Felix decided that the older Björn gets, the more permanent his digital footprint may become, and they’re simply choosing to give him autonomy over what parts of his life make it to the internet. Kjellberg has essentially decided that the family doesn't need to wait until Björn is old enough to object.
