Simple Change in Meal Timing May Support Brain Health as You Age

Nutrition has long been connected to healthy aging, but new research shows when people eat may be just as important as what they eat. Meal timing has become a growing area of study, with scientists exploring how eating patterns influence metabolism, inflammation, sleep, and even brain function.

According to a recent study, older adults who limit their daily eating to a shorter time window might experience cognitive improvements compared to those who spread their meals across a longer portion of the day. While researchers caution that additional studies are needed, the findings add to growing evidence that time-restricted eating could play a role in supporting long-term brain health.

Researchers Studied Meal Timing During Weight Loss

The study focused on 47 women, all of whom were between the ages of 50 and 79. Each of the participants was overweight or was dealing with obesity. Every participant was also actively engaged in a six-month weight-loss program. As part of the study, the participants reduced their daily caloric intake by roughly 500 calories.

However, one group consumed their meals within a nine-hour window, typically between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., while the other group spread meals across roughly 12 hours each day. Both groups lost about the same amount of weight. But researchers found something that they weren’t expecting. In addition to losing around 15 pounds, the people in the study who consumed their meals within a nine-hour window showed improved cognitive function.

A Shorter Eating Window Was Linked to Better Cognitive Performance

When the study concluded, participants who consumed their daily calories during the nine-hour window performed better on tests measuring spatial planning, executive function, and problem-solving. According to researchers, these improvements may point to improved brain function that goes beyond the benefits of weight loss. Although some memory-related improvements were observed, they were not statistically significant, meaning larger studies will be needed to determine whether meal timing consistently affects memory as well.

Dr. Sue Shapses, the lead researcher on the study, said that the findings indicate that "meal timing may have unique benefits for brain health beyond weight loss itself." The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.

Why Timing Might Matter

Scientists who study cognitive health believe that several biological mechanisms may explain the findings of the Rutgers University study. Limiting food intake to a consistent daily window may better align eating habits with the body's natural circadian rhythm, the internal clock that regulates sleep, hormone production, metabolism, and many other physiological processes.

Researchers also believe that time-restricted eating may support healthy aging by reducing inflammation, improving insulin sensitivity, and enhancing metabolism. All three of those factors have been linked to healthy brain aging, but the latest study is the first example of scientists pointing to meal timing as a way to improve them. While these theories continue to be studied, they provide plausible explanations for why meal timing may influence cognitive function.

Brain Health Depends on More Than One Habit

Dr. Shapses, her team, and other researchers have emphasized the fact that improving brain health requires more than one thing. For example, routine physical activity, quality sleep, consistent social engagement, and eating a healthy diet remain among the most important lifestyle factors associated with healthy cognitive aging. Organizations such as the National Institute on Aging continue to recommend dietary patterns rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins as part of an overall brain-healthy lifestyle.

Time-restricted eating is not meant to replace these other steps. Instead, it’s another tool that people can use as they combat the potentially harmful side effects of aging.

Researchers Urge Caution Before Drawing Big Conclusions

The findings of the study on time-restricted eating and healthy aging are encouraging, but researchers acknowledge that there are multiple limitations to keep in mind. Most notably, the study involved a relatively small pool of participants, all of whom were women, which makes the findings hard to extrapolate across all groups. Additionally, the study has not yet undergone a full peer review, which means that scientists cannot say whether time-restricted eating directly prevents age-related cognitive decline.

However, this doesn’t mean that the study should be ignored. Instead, the findings should be viewed as an early step in understanding how meal timing influences the aging brain. Larger studies involving more diverse populations will be necessary before health experts make broad recommendations. As scientists continue exploring the connection between eating habits and brain aging, even small changes to daily routines may one day become part of a broader strategy for maintaining mental sharpness throughout, regardless of age.
