Starbucks Is Bringing Back Cozy Coffee Shops

Remember when going to Starbucks meant settling into a comfy chair with your favorite coffee and staying long enough to finish a chapter of your book? Well, the coffee chain wants to bring some of that experience back.

Starbucks has been redesigning its coffeehouses to make them more inviting, with softer seating and a little more personality. If you miss spending a rainy afternoon at our neighborhood coffee shop, these changes might be welcome news.

Over the years, Starbucks locations became more focused on being able to order a drink and go. In some locations, the seating disappeared altogether.

Now, the company is reversing course. As part of its Back to Starbucks initiative, the coffeehouse is returning thousands of seats to its locations. That means more cushioned chairs and comfortable spots where we can enjoy our drinks without feeling like we need to rush out the door.

Starbucks has also brought back ceramic mugs for anyone staying in the store, along with condiment bars that allow us to customize our drinks.

Your Neighborhood Starbucks Might Look a Little Different

Starbucks doesn't want every location to look the same. Instead, the company is incorporating local artwork and decorative touches that reflect the surrounding community.

For example, an East Hampton coffeehouse will feature a compass among its wall decorations, reflecting the area's character.

Meanwhile, other locations are getting warmer colors, softer lighting, and furniture that makes them look more like neighborhood cafés. Some stores are even experimenting with rugs.

These changes aren't limited to the seating areas. Starbucks is redesigning some espresso bars so customers will have a better view of baristas preparing their drinks.

And there's good news for those of us who still prefer to order ahead. The company is introducing dedicated pickup areas with raised platforms for mobile orders. The idea is to make collecting a drink easier without creating a crowd around the counter. So, whether we're stopping in for five minutes or spending an hour with a friend, the space should work a little better.

When Will We See the Changes?

Starbucks already began testing its refreshed designs in New York City and Southern California. They said customers were spending more time in redesigned locations and returning more frequently.

The company also outlined plans to refresh more than 1,000 coffeehouses by the end of 2026, with additional renovations expected over the course of the next few years. Not every location will receive the same makeover, and the timing will vary.

Maybe We'll Stay for That Second Cup

There's nothing wrong with grabbing a latte on the way to work. Sometimes, that's all the time we have.

But, coffee shops have always offered something beyond the drinks themselves. They're places where we can meet a friend, catch up on a little reading, or enjoy a quiet moment away from home.

If Starbucks can make those little visits more comfortable again, we might find ourselves staying long enough to order another coffee. And, this time, there might even be a comfy chair waiting for us.
