Researchers found that AI systems were significantly more likely to affirm users than humans would in similar situations. In fact, chatbots agreed with users’ actions about 49% more often than people did in comparable scenarios. This tendency is not accidental. Instead, it’s a feature that developers put into place deliberately. When users find AI chatbots agreeable, they’re more likely to continue conversing with them, establishing a relationship that prioritizes agreement over accuracy.

An example discussed in Stanford University’s study saw a user ask an AI bot if it was acceptable to leave trash in a plastic bag hanging on a tree in a public park. Instead of reprimanding the user for leaving garbage behind, the chatbot blamed the park for not providing enough garbage cans. Human answers to the same question included the fact that many parks expect visitors to take their trash with them, which is why there aren’t garbage cans.

Researchers say that by promoting a lack of personal responsibility, AI chatbots may be creating a dangerous environment in which people make decisions based solely on their own preferences, and not what is right, responsible, or safe.

Experts have also shared concerns about AI and mental health. Some studies suggest that overly agreeable AI can reinforce negative thought patterns or even contribute to delusional thinking in extreme cases.

What Users Should Keep In Mind
