Therapy Dogs Help College Students Make Friends, Study Finds
It's hard to resist a friendly dog who’d like a little attention. And, when you're a college student juggling classes and deadlines, spending an afternoon with a cuddly canine probably sounds like a pretty sweet deal.
But, those puppy visits might be doing more than giving students a break from their studies. New research suggests that therapy dogs are helping college students connect with the people around them. And, sometimes, a friendly little face with four legs is all it takes to get a conversation started.
The Dogs Were the Main Attraction
At the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus, students have access to a program called Building Academic Retention Through K-9s, or B.A.R.K. It's a chance to step away from schoolwork and spend time with therapy dogs.
Researchers wanted to know what made those visits special to students, so they asked 676 participants, most of them first-year students, to describe what they found meaningful about the experience. The research left that question open-ended, allowing students to explain what they enjoyed in their own words.
Unsurprisingly, the dogs received plenty of compliments. Nearly one-third of the students mentioned the animals themselves, highlighting their friendly personalities and comforting presence. One student even wished people could be as accepting as dogs. It's a sentiment plenty of dog lovers understand.
A Little Puppy Love Goes a Long Way
It seems a good canine cuddle can make a stressful afternoon a little lighter. Nearly 11% of the students said the most meaningful part of their visit was how it changed their mood. Many described feeling calmer afterward, while others mentioned feeling happier or more comforted.
But, the dogs weren't the only ones making an impression. About 15% of the participants said the visits helped them experience a sense of connection.
For some, that meant bonding with a dog. For others, it meant chatting with the people who brought the animals or meeting fellow students. And that's where things got especially interesting.
Dogs Make Great Icebreakers
Starting a conversation with a stranger isn't always easy, especially when you're new to college. But, put a friendly dog in the middle of the room, and, suddenly, there's something everyone can talk about. Students described how the visits made it easier to strike up conversations without feeling pressured.
One student said chatting with the handlers helped take their mind off school. Another appreciated having the opportunity to talk about everyday things with other people. The researchers believe the dogs may help create a relaxed environment where conversations happen more naturally. And, for students who are away from home for the first time, that sense of connection is a major win.
There's More to These Visits Than Petting Dogs
These findings offer an interesting possibility for colleges looking to support their students. Therapy dog programs might be useful, not only for providing comfort, but also for helping students feel more connected to their campus communities.
The researchers even suggested that campus counseling services could consider therapy dogs in group sessions to help people feel more comfortable talking.
Of course, this study was based on students describing their experiences. It didn't establish that therapy dog visits directly improve friendships or long-term mental health. But, it did reveal that students valued more than the chance to spend time with a cute animal.
Sometimes All It Takes Is a Dog
There's something rather sweet about the idea that a dog can help two strangers strike up a conversation. Neither person needs a clever opening line. They already have something in common, and it's probably wagging its tail.
For college students finding their way in a new environment, those little interactions can make a big difference. And the dogs? Well, they get an afternoon of attention while the humans make a few new connections, a win-win for everyone.
